Wanganui Education Board.
« The report of the Committee of Inquiry into the charges against the headmaster for chastising a pupil named Parker at Feilding was read. The report expatiated on the difficulty a teacher had in enforcing discipline, and stated that though the cane might have to be used, it should not always be in evidence, as when it is so, it indicates weakness on the part of a teacher. It might be wise for the Board to consider whether the power to inflict corporal punishment should not be confined to the head teacher, the other teachers having to report cases for punishment to him. The report went into the matter exhaus tively, and the Board discussed it fully. The recommendation of the Committee of Inquiry, that the decision of the teacher not to re-admit the girl, unless she submits to punishment be upheld, was struck out, and the following amendment, moved by Mr Lethbridge, was carried, " That the child be re-admitted by the father making an apology." The report was adopted.
