Proposed by Cr Purcell, seconded by Cr Rhodes, That the scrapings from the Main street be spread along the sandy parts of Duncan street, and that any forming that is required be left in the hands of the engineer. Carried.

The engineer reported as follows : — " I have the honor to report that during the past month shingle has been spread upon the Wirokino, Moutoa, and Sandon Roads, and upon Russell, Robinson, Park, and Gray Streets, and a shingle crossing has been made on Main-street, and Main-street has been partially scraped. The shingle received is of good quality, having a good proportion of boulders, which boulders when broken make the toughest metal, and form the most compact roads, and roads which will bear the hardest wear and heaviest traffic. Hand-broken metal is worth as 6d per ton more than metal broken by machinery, as all metal broken by machinery is more or less rounded, whereas hand-broken is angular, and ponsequently packs firmly. In consequence of broken weather I have suspended deliveries of shingle, and shall pe glad if the Council will say whether in its opinion, deliveries may now be resumed. I beg to suggest that the scrapings now lying in heaps on Main Street be ured to re-grade footpath from Mr Easton's shop to the Moutoa Road, and from Post Office to pound, and that some of the finest Palmerston metal be spread upon it. I also would suggest that 5 trucks of screenings be obtained for topping footpaths in business portion of the town, and the footpath to Public Library, which latter path has been under water of late. I have driven pegs to-day in Baker Street, and a specification is written for re-forming that street and Howanstreet. It is, however, my very decided opinion that spending money on those sandy streets in this way is waste, until the Council can see its way to shingle a track by spending £2 per chain in metal. If the day men were to fiil a few holes which need filling, that is all I would recommend at present. Purcell-street is in a much worse state than either of the streets named, and a track formed there even without metal, would be of some service. I trust the Council will pardon me for writing thus, as it does not matter a brass farthing to me where the work is done or money spent. j Proposed by Cr Westwood, sec- j onded by Cr Rhodes, That the 're- | commendation of the engineer be j adopted, and that Howan and Baker's , and Purcell streets be attended to by j having the holes filled in. Carried.
