* Several, officers of Chasseurs have been arresied at Nice in the north of France, for shouting " Vive 1' Armee ! " and " Down with the traitors ! " Contrary to expectation^, and possibly owing to the determined attitude shown by the Government no demonstration was made durinp to day's race-meeting at Long champs. • Everything is also qniet within the city of Paris. M. L)ub»t, the President of the Republic, wa* the recipient of grea> Republican and Socialist demonstra •iona on going to the and retruing from the races. He received nn ovation on the course, though many habitues were absent. The extensive precautions secured perfect order. At th° races yesterday M. Kran'z the M uister of Wai- Ojlnnel Picquart, the- champion of Captain D eyfua, and M. D Icasse, th Minister f>r Foreign Affiir-\ wn-i cheered by the. populace; but M. ' Rnch:'fort " end M. D : rouledf, tbf reactionaries", were hisased. A deputation consisting of Socialist deputies waited on the Premier to day and protested against the brutality of the polica force af Lmschamps on Sunday last. M, D lpuy defdnded the action nl the police, and when the mattei | wag brought up in the Chamber oi Deputies by the Socialist, the Premier insisted on a vote on tbf subject being taken, M. Dupuy re yarding the charges of the Socialist 1 as being one of no confidence in the Government. A long and heated discussion arose; and eventually the Chamber of Deputies by 821 votes to 178 re solved to only support the Government while, it was determined t/ energetically defend the Republic and to ensure order.. Interpreting this decision as a covert vote of censure,- the Ministry resigned. It is believed that M. Dupuy rod for a fail. The Socialists and many Radicn'e were aissati^fiod wiih the Cabins'contradictory attitude over the Dreyfus case, and distrusted M Dupuy's intention to punish GeneralBoisdtffi'e and Mercier. Dbe rp-!riul of D.'eyfu=» at R»nnes will differ from the 1894 trial in that the court martial will includ' officers of the Artillery, the. branch of the army to which Dreyfus belonged. „ It is expected that the preliminary inquiry will la=t si* w»V'.
