Manawatu Licensing Committee.

1 mittee. ! The annual meeting of the Manawatu Licensing Committee was held at the Marton Courthouse on Thursday. Present — A. Greenfield, Esq., S.M., (chairman), Dr Skerman, D. Coughlin, R. K. Simpson, E. H. Humphrey, and G.N. Wood. Sergt.Major Ramsay appeared for the police. The sub-committee, consisting of Dr Skerman. E. H. Humphrey and R. K. Simpson, appointed at last meeting to report upon necessary provision being made in hotels for escape in cases of fire, submitted the following suggestions :— " That each hotel be provided with at least one convenient back staircase. That a firebell, sufficiently large to be heard in all parts of the house be hung on each landing. That directions showing the nearest way to each staircase be posted in conspicuous places in all hotels. This as an additional precaution, in all buildings of two or more storeys, a light balcony be erected under every bedroom where practical, not less than 3ft wide, supported by iron brackets, with wood or iron guard rail and light ladders on the balcony in the proportion of one ladder to tea rooms." The report was adopted and a resolution was carried that it be an instruction to the inspectors to see that the suggestions made in the report were given effect to. The various police inspectors' reports were read, the only matters requiring attention being in connection with improved means of escape in case of fire, which the Committee considered would be met by thetsarrying out of the suggestions made by the sub-Committee. All transfers and applications were granted except that of the application of Wm. Darville, Post Office, Foxton, which was adjourned to 23rd inst., •pending decision in cases for alleged breaches of Act. — Advocate.
