the fixed charges of the Council had been allowed for. Mr Thynne was using this statement as ad explanation as to how the interest on a loan of £3000 at 5 per cent, could be easily met. The Mayor was so decisive and so reticent that Mr Thynne stated to the meeting he was almost sure of his facts but had been staggered by the denial of the Mayor, and should there not have been this sum available he would never have urged the raising of the loan. Me took occasion to remark that he still felt that the annual estimates prepared by the Borough showed such a balance, and he would make a point of looking up the matter and publishing the results. We have now had placed before us the facts as printed and published, and yet which not one Councillor present at the meeting could speak to. In the year ending 31st March, 1895, the estimates show a sum of £250 15s 8d for new metalling ; for 1896, the sum of £310 7s sd is mentioned for new metalling ; for 1897, the sum of £331 10s od is set down for new metalling ; for 1898, the sum was £198 9s gd. To those who heard the contradiction given by the Mayor to Mr Thynne's statements, these particulars will come as a revelation, and the question is bound to arise as to how the Mayor could have been so ill-informed of these facts.
