The Manawatu County Council invites tenders for supplying clay and sand on the Beach road. Tenders close on 10th instant. The Committee appointed to arrange for the Forester's Ball, met last night and made all preliminary arrangements. No effort is to be spared in making the ball a great success, and first class musicans are to be engaged, probably from Palmerston. T. J. Andrews, who sold laudanum to the girl Andrews, who was found dead recently, has been fined £2 and costs, for selling the drug without knowing the purchaser. Mr Coleman Phillips, of the Wairarapa, has presented the Museum with a very fine specimen of a duck, obtained by crossing pure-bred Muscovy ducks with pure-bred slaty blue Andalusian drake. The bird was bred by Mr W. J. Martin, oi Huangaroa, from a sitting of eggs supplied by Mr Phillips, and it is thought the new cross will make a most serviceable breed for market purposes. The specimen at the Museum, which has been set up by Mr A. Yuill, the taxidermist, weighed four and a half pounds at the age of about four months. The ferret which raided poultry yards in the vicinity of Aurora-terrace recently, I and was cut off in the midst of an L enterprising career, has also been cured and placed in the exhibition ca^es. The animal is the largest of its kin J the Museum possesses. — Post. It is stated that late Sir Julius Vogel's estate will be sworn at under The Manchestor Guardian, on the authority of the Sydney Mail, says " Wellington (New Zealand) has been visited by an epidemic of somnambulism. Scarcely a night passes without the public apparance far from home of persons in various stages of deshabille and irresponsibility. The curious thing is that they are all ladies. What with high winds, periodic earthquakes, and chronic somnambulism, the inhabitants of Wellington have much to contend against." Mr H. A. Field, M.H.R., speaking at Otaki on Wednesday night, said he intended to contest the seat at t^e next election. He also informed the meeting that no effort had ever been made by the Premier to coerce him into supporting the Government, The Premier rather consulted his party, and on minor details the minority gave way to the wishes of the majority. He had many times known the Premier to give way to his following ; but he had never known the party give way to him (the Premier). A distressing case of burning occurred at Kairanga on Monday afternoon, says the Manawatu Times. Mr J. Hurley's four-year-old daughter walked into a paddock where some logs were burning, and sitting down near one, the wind, it is surmised, blew the flames on to her clothing, which caught fire. Severe injuries were inflicted.
In Palmerston the Telegraph Office is having a box fixed in which telegrams can be posted after hours. A capital idea. Could we not have the same convenience hero ? In the case against' Crossey, a publican, for breaches of the Bankruptcy Act, the defendant elected to be dealt with summarily, and the S.M. dismissed two charges of hazardous speculation) and gambling, etc., and reserved judgment in the third as to not keeping proper books. President Kruger has made an attempt to conciliate the capitalists interested in the Rand goldfields at the expense of the resident Outlanders. His scheme failed, however, as both capitalists and residents demand that tha concession of the franchise shall precede any other reforms. Russian tea, poured upon finely chopped ice, served in tall, thin glasses, is acceptable and dainty for a summer drink in Russia. Mr Field said he objected to the proposed acquisition of Kapiti Island far acclimatisation purposes, holding that such work should not be done at the public expense. The island would cost £10,000 or £15,000. and he objected to such a sum being expended 'by the Government for the favoured few. Kapiti was only suitable for sheep, and the idea of keeping it for an acclimatisation reserve was monstrous and absurd. It is said that on every voyage of a first-class ocean steamer about 3000 pieces of glassware and crokery are broken. At the last meeting of the Auckland Education Board a letter was read from various churches and temperance organisations within the Taranaki, Egmont, Hawera and Patea electorates asking the Board to lend its assistance when opportunity offered to make the compulsory teaching of temperance a part of the common school syllabus. In Europe the average length of human life is greatest in Sweden and Norway, and least in Italy and Austria. Mr Field at the conclusion of his meeting was awarded a vote of thanks and confidence, The meeting also passed a vote of confidence in the present Government. The Premier of Victoria (Sir George Turner) has received a cablegram from the Right Hon. Mr Chamberlain Secretary of State for the Colonies, in answer to the message recently sent at the suggestion of the Premier of New Zealand, urging the Imperial Government to conserve the interests of the Empire in Samoa. Mr Chamberlain states that British interests in Samoa are receiving, and will continue to receive, the serious attention of the Imperial Government. Express trains in Russia rarely travel faster than 22 miles an hour. Frozen milk in large quantities is sent from Holland and Sweden to England. The Chamber of Commerce of Lagos has decided to sue the Right Rev. Herbert Tugwell, Bishop of Equatorial Africa for slander. The statement to which they take exception is one attributed to the Bishop to the effect that three-fourths of the Europeans on the coast of that portion of Africa die from drunkenness. The well-known roller mills belonging to Messrs Richter, -Nannestad and Co., at Palmerston, are running day and night, the demand for their flour exceeding their expectations. The Manawatu flour, manufactured at these mills, is highly spoken of for its excellent quality, being quite equal to Canterbury and at much cheapsr cost to the consumer. The firm are receiving orders from Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu, and Hawke's Bay, which necessitates the running of the mills the twenty-four hours through,—Dannevirke Press. The chairman of the Dunedin Benevolent Trustees states that the effect of old age pensions in Dunedin will be a saving in out-door relief of £31 16s 6d. Fanners will be glad to learn that frozen mutton has again advanced. North Island is now quoted at 4d per lb., a record price, and nearly £d better than this time last year. . The bank cheques passing through the clearing-houses in London and New York in. one month exceed the value of all the gold and silver coin in the world.
