Foxton Mutual Improvement Society.
Last evening in the Methodist Schoolroom the above-named held its opening Social for the season, when there was a good attendance, the Rev. Mr Wooliass, President of the Society, occupying the chair.
The programme opened with a pianoforte solo by Miss C. Austin ; followed by solos by MrsWoollass, Miss Anderson, Miss Simpson, Miss Spring, Mrs T. Nye; songs, Mr S. Howan and Mr Furrie ; duet, Mesdames Woollass and Anderson ; reading, Mr A. Morgan ; recitation, Mr H. Baker ; and songs by the company ; Mrs Marton and Mr Baker actiog as accompanyists. The coffee supper nicely got up by the Misses M. and L. Austin and £. Spring, was evidently appeciated by those present. The report of last season's work was presented by the Acting-Secretary, Mr H. Baker, which showed that although there had been a good membership for the session there had been a slight loss financially, owing chiefly to the heavy expenditure involved in getting rules printed, etc.
The Treasurer's (Miss M. Austin) report showed the receipts to have been £$ 2s gd and the expenditure £7 2s 6d, leaving a debit balance of 19s gd.
The Secretary and Treasurer were thanked for their reports and the same adopted. The election of officers resulted as follbws — President, Rev. Mr Woollass; Vice- Presidents, Messrs W. Stewart, T. Westwood, and Osborne ; Secretary, Mr H. Baker ; Assistant-Sec-retary, Mr T. Dunckley ; Treasurer, Miss Furrie ; Journalist, Mr W. Johnstone ; Assistant-Journalist, Mr G. H. Stiles ; Committee, Misses E. Spring, C. Austin, and Simpson, Messrs Simpson, Furrie, and A. Osborne.
It was decided to hold the meetings during the coming session on Wednesday instead of Tuesday, as last year. The receipts of the evening were given m £3 89 Od, with an initiated
membership of 54 members, which was considered veiy satisfactory. The debate for next week will be a' very interesting one, viz., •• Should women be allowed a seat in Parliament." Affirmative, Mrs Woollaas and Miss M. Austin and Mr H. Simpson ; negative, Mr Furrie.-. The meeting closed with God Save the Queen.
