Suicide of an Ex-Mayor of Masterton.
R Or. Williams, an olcl resident ■ad well-known in the Wellington hatricf, committed suicide by hanging himself in the Empire tables, Masterton, on Monday morning. Financial troubles are ■uppußid to have been the cause.
D^ciae'd wa3 Magterton's firßt Mayor. He was seen alive and in apparently good spirits at 20 minutes o 9, and was found dead at 2 minutes .past nine.
R. G. Williams, was a brother of Vl r Joseph Williams, the well-known business man, and brother-in-law tr Yirs Walt r Vevty. Deceased wa* mils' y^ars ago one the mo^t popular m?n in Masterton, being el^ctrd firs' Mayor of :hc Borough in 1876. He has hud many misfortunes since, md was.in rather low water.
In hi 3 phop an envelope wa3 found with the fallowing words written in pencil on it :—" Cannot stand tb^ 1 ■jtmin any lonser. Break the news *fint!y t:> my poor wife and faim'y. M-iy fjid f .rgive ran, and may friends speak charitably and pass on. My -and hia ran imfc.— U.G.W." On che other side of tho envelope wer< he wr.rds "God help and forgiv.
