« The ordinary monthly meeting o the Council was held yesterday. Pre sent — Crs. J. G. Wilson (chairman) J. R. McLennan, P. Clark, W. Masters H. Hammond and F. Robinson. Inwar^ correspondence was deal with as follows : — From the Executors of the late Au gust Gust, asking the Council not t< charge the 10 per cent, on rates over due as they had settled the account a: soon as probate was obtained. — Re mission made. From the Palmerston North Hos pital and Charitable Aid Board, stat ing that a levy of 58 per £1000 hat been struck in the district, the amoun due by the Council being £232 103. From T. Cameron, J. Ellery, and F Richardson, asking that Gust's line b< metalled. — No funds for the work. From S. George, reporting that th( tramway goods shed should be takei down and re-erected. The cost woulc be £10. — Work to be done. From Charles Watkin, asking to b< allowed to make use of part of th< acre reserve on Whale's line. — Mi Wrigley to report. From H. Marsh, Sandon, applying for license to slaughter cattle on sec tion 34, block 15, Rangitoto. — Granted From the Department of Lands and Survey, notifying that the Minister ci Lands would take charge of the roac approaches to the site of the Bulls Bridge, under section 113, Public Works Act, as suggested, with the view of facilitating the action of the local bodies in raising the necessary loans. It was decided to point out to the Department that communication between McDonell's line and the proposed bridge, could be best made along the flat, commencing in front of Mi Bull's gate. From W. Morrison, R. W. Macmillan, J. M. Greenaway, and eight other ratepayers of the Kawa Kawa riding, asking that the unexpended loan money borrowed for work on Main drain road be used to raise and form the road between Tcnnant and Mcmillan's gate.— It was resolved to invite tenders for the work as requested. From George and Healey Wilton, asking that both their names be placed on the rate roll instead of Wilton Bros.— lt' was stated that unless the applicants . could show that their interests in land held by them had been individualised, there was no power to put their names on the rate roll as required. From the Treasury, notifying the payment of J6375, subsidy on rates, and loan for metalling Sanson's line. From the Department of Agricul ture, re inspection of dairies. The Council objected to the Department appointing inspectors for the County. A report of receipts and expenditure in connection with the tramway was presented, which showed that the year was commenced with debit balance of £3075 14s 3d. The total receipts were £1750 4s sd, and . the expenditure £1809. — It was stated that the amount expended in repairs was larger than during previous years. An opinion was. expressed by "the Council that in view of the increased debit balance, an effort should be made to reduce the expenditure. Messrs Bailey and Harris attended the meeting and made a request, on behalf of the ratepayers on Frecklington's line, that the drain in front of the lI3W school be bridged. — It was decided to grant committee £5 towards the cost of the work. It was resolved — That the following alterations be made on the rate roll: H. Hunt in place of Chas. Edwards for sections 34 and 35, blocV7> Te Kawa ; W. J. Tucker in place of E. Campion for stetions 35, 36, and 37, blofck 3, Te Kawa. Thfct Cr. Strang's action in increasing tKte quantity of metal to be delivered on road in the Awahou riding by C. Nelson as per contract No* 63 from 100 to 250 yards be confirmed. That Cr. Hammond's action in accepting W. Anderson's tender for supplying and delivery of 300 yards of metal on Banks, Waitohi, Taipo, Awahuri, Rowe's and Hammond's lines at 4s 6d per yard be confirmed. The balance-sheet presented by the Clerk showed a credit balance to the general account of £3602. To the Sandon rkftqg, £66 7s 4d ; Mt. Stewart, £41 5s 3d ; Campbell, £40 os4d ; Carnarvon, £35 ; Kawa Kawa, £136 $«8d ; Awahou, £90 17s 8d ; Contractor's acconnt, £58; Loans, £641 us 6d, making a total of £4717 gs 3d, against which had to be placed the debit balance of £3134 ios to the tramway, and £65 is 2d debit balance for the Waitohi riding, and £33 6s id due for Charitable Aid 6s idd interest, leaving a credit of £1486 5s id, from which deduct £641 1 ia 6d loan money leaves a net credit balance of £845. A statement of the deijt of the County under 4he Loans to Local Bodies Act, showed that fc now amounts to a total of £19,129 8s 3d, and the yearly interest paid was £0,56 gs 6d.
