A Melbourne Tragedy
An awful tragedy occurred on Monday in the Eastern Market, better known as " Paddy's Market," a fine building in Exhibition street running right through from Brooke street to Little Collins street.
A phrenologist named Gordon Medor who had a stall in the market, attempted to shoot Mrs Stevens, the wife of the holder of an adjoining stall.
When the shot failed to take effect he severely belaboured the woman on the head with his revolver.
Mr Stevens, husband of the woman attacked rushed to his wife's aid. Medor then turned upon him afterwards cutting his throat.
Thereupon a man named Freedman appeared on the scene. Advancing to meet him, Medor stabbed him severely in the eye.
By this time an excited crowd had collected, and police aid had been brought to the scene of the tragedy. Medor resisted violently the efforts to arrest him, but after a great struggle he was overcome and removed to the gaol.
His murderous propensities are supposed to have been due to his suffering from a misapprehension that his fellow stall-holders were trying to deprive him of his livelihood.
