SHANNON RACES.
The usual annual meeting of the Shannon Hack Racing Club took place Ofl- Thursday, ooijthe course on the south of the town;- The weather was exceedingly fine, and there was a very fair attendance. There being no totalisator the course abounded in bookmakers, who seemed to be doing good business. The Otaki Maori Band played during the day. The officials all worked hard and everything went smoothly. The Club Hotel had a booth, and Mr Langley, of Foxton, had a refreshment booth. Mr Hillary had the outside gates.
Following are the results : —
Shorts Handicap, 5 furlongs. — Creswick, 1; Papa, a; Mirth, 3. Eleven horses started for this event, arid the finish between Creswjck and P4pa was very close. " ■'" ' V^'.-'Saij
Handicap Hurdles, i£ miles.--Rau-kawa 11, r; Daed^a^Mljbus, 3. These were the only three entered. A protest against Raukawa II for running inside a hurdle was lodged, but was not upheld. Trial Hurdles, a mile and a distance, -Raukawa 11, 1; Dandy, 2; Dubious, 3. Seven horses started. Why Kowri fell at the home hurdle the first time round. The jockey, though hurt at the time, soon- recovered. The race bid fair to have been his but for the mishap.
Shannon Racing Club Handicap, i mile and a quarter.— Patiper, i'?ji3he*|) Jack, 2 ; Her Majesty, 3. Eight horses faced the starter. The racing was good throughout, but the favourite passed the post first. *
District Race, one mile-^iio,«raee. !seven horses started, bat a. chfpfer a accidents led to no jiunibprs'appearing. The horse first past the |>ost, Lancer, had a protest entered against him by the owner ot Creswick, ,who came in second, for having hajd a professional rider on him, then a protest was lodged against Creswick because of a doubt of the 'owner being properly a member of the Club. The third horse, Ironsides, was unable to claim stakes or divvy's as the ridec, had omitted to get weighed on comiag in. These protests were upheld, and the Stewards declared " no<race." Easter Handicap, firile.— Papa. i ; Her M^esty, 2 ;ss&£ 3. 'Sev^n Started. This was a ca^lttTrace, the winner only defeating the Second horse by a length in the straight. v '*.
