General Booth.

» During an interview accorded press representatives in Dunedin last Wednesday, General Booth spoke of the scheme formulated by the Salvation Army for celebrating the dawn of the 20th century. The General said that a distinguished feature of the scheme was an increase in certai\ important branches of Army wq__^>, hroughout the world, as follows— 70,000 increase in soldiery, 70,000 increase in juniors in weekly

aeoommodation in sooial institutions £70,000 to be raised and devoted to Army purposes. Writing of General Booth's present visit to the colonies, the South Australian Register says : —If the chief of the " Blood and fire " brigades had confined his attention solely to spiritual work— if the destitute and the vioious had simply been provided with Wa,r Crvs, and sensational music, and stimulating preaching— the influence of the Army would have been merely transitory, and the presentation of Christian truth would have necessarily been woefully incomplete and unsatisfying; but Mr Booth, and the wife who so nobly seconded all his labours, realised from tbe first that their operations must include agenoies for the betterment of the conditions of the unfortunate people whom they desire to help. It is the intensely practical character of the work which has commanded the profound respect and sympathy of all who wish well to philanthropic effort and ensured for the organisa tion the increasing support and con fidence accorded to it.
