The University Boat Race.
The weather wag lovely for the boat-race on Saturday. Cambridge won the toaa and chose the Surrey side of the river. The tide was sluggish. From a capital start Cambridge led by half v length at Glasper's boat house. Oxford then forged ahead and established a slight lead, but at Wilden'a in the Crab tree reach, Cambridge ' increased their stroke, and by the time Hammersmith Bridge was reached, they had half a length of a lead, the bridge being shot in 7min 2djec. After passing the bridge, the water became rougher, thus suiting the Cambridge crew. Some of the Oxford mem here showed signs of distress, but responded splendidly to the spurt of , H. Jt Gold, the stroke, until they shipped a quantity of water. The Cambridge, boat was two and a half lengths ahead at E'nswick Church which was passed in 12min 163ec. Crossing to the Middlesex side of the river, Cambridge shot Barnes'Bridge with four lengths of a lead. The time occupied to this point was 17min 22*ec. In reppon.se to Gold* call for a final effort, the Oxford crew increased its stroke to thirty five per minute, while Cambridge was rowing thirty one. Cambridge won by three and a quarter lengths. Time, 21min isec. Two of the Oxford crew fainted, and they all showed signs of distress, except Gold, who was hailed with immense enthmia^m. Calvert, the Victorian 'student, rowed No. 2 in the Cambridge boat.
