The Trading Stamp Company
The Wellington Guardian has recently been Earning its readers to have nothing to do with a concern known as by the above name. It ~ L explains the method of business as follows :— Say a grocer took 1000 coupons. He would pay the "companv" a' the rate of 2. 6d fc 10 ), r-quals 25 fo? 1000. Thrn 4hc grocer would giv_ these coupons away to his customers at tho rate of one coupon * for ev. ry aixpencp spent at bis shop. The butcher and baker and candle - et^ck. ranker wuild do ditto, an. a" aonn as an individual had cnllpct. d 1000 coupons in his coupon hnck (presented by th- «« company ") an the resulfcof 1000 .ixppncps pppnt, hp.OTphe. would take it to "Tbe People's Cash Coupon Comnanv," and if tbey wpro at home (which • they would probably not have been %hen the time camp for the coupons to be presented), ihey could claim cash 20* for tbe 1000 coupons. Thus (had the little oracle worked) the tradesman would bave allowed a discount of 25? on £25 paid to him over the counter, equal . 5 per cent., of whiob, nominally, 20 . would go to the customer, provided the coupons were all presented, and 5s to tbe " company." The paper adds:— ln our la*fc issue we advised caution in dealing with "The People's Cash Coupon Oompany " or any other " company " ofa similar character, aod added, "we understand there are several now being canvassed throughont the colony by emissaries from Sydney and America, and all we have to say to those who think it wise to risk loss of customers throueb the bad effect that would be caused by a possible failure to redeem the coupons is — find ont who are the principals, whether they bave suffici■r ent means, whether they are reliable, and last, but not least, whether thpy can be legally reaohed, that is to say, whether tbey are within the jurisdiction of the colony."
