THE BOROUGH RANGER.

TO THE EDITOB OF THE MVNAWATU HERALD. Sir, — Allow me through the medium of your columns, as a ratepayer, to complain of the conduct of the ranger in not doing his duty. The number of stock that appear to be deliberately turned on to the roads at night to graze, to fill up the drains, and to cause a public nuisance, are becoming alarming, besides getting into people's gardens and orchards, etc. It is not only now and again that the public roads are infested with ' stray ' animals, but every night, showing that the ranger must shut his eyes, or receive the ratepayer's money (of which they appear to be very short, judging by the state of some of the roads), for work that he does not perform. There is also the danger to people's lives of being horned or falling over the beasts, which has already happened on more Jhan one occasion. Perhaps it is the ranger does not think he is sufficiently paid for the faithful carrying out of his onerous duties, if so, his salary should be raised, or the City Fathers should lose no time in calling for fresh tenders, and obtain some one who will keep the thorpugh fares clear. Since the above was written, Sir, I noticed some cattle resting at the town pump all the morning waiting for the ranger to come along. Thanking you in anticipation. I am, &c, A Ratepayer. Foxton, 21st March, 1899.
