A Dreadful Explosion.
40 PERSONS KILLED AND OVER 100 WOUNDED. The Lagouban Naval Magazine, near Toulon, France, was blown up by an explosion at 2 o'clock on Sunday morning, killing 40, and wounding at least no residents in the neighbourhood. Many were thrown out of their beds by the .force of the concussion, and rushed in their night attire into the streets in terrible panic, believing that an earthquake had occurred. Numbers of people were buried in the ruins. One vehicle was blown into the sea a hundred yards distant, and the occupants drowned. The explosion is attributed to chemical decomposition, a box of smokeless powder igniting and exploding two hundred tons of powder. Two other magazines, though close by, escaped. In the explosion all the houses for miles around had all the windows smashed and chimneys demolished. The injured were fearfully mutilated. The corporal in charge of the magazine was literally scalped, and huge stones were hurled great distances. The explosion was felt at Nice. Rescue work is proceeding. Four sentries were wounded by the explosion.
