The South Sea Expedition,
ACTION FOR DAMAGES BY MISS HASTIE. At the Auckland civil sessions oi the Supreme Court, a case of some interest in connection with the South Sea expedition projected last summer •by Miss Hastie was commenced This was an action brought by Jane Alexia Hastie (at present in America) against Hy. Beattie, ebip owner, of Sydney, to recover £915 special damages and £500 general damage? for alleged breach of covenant in connection with the charter of the barquentine Sydney Belle, belonging to ' Sydney. Some time prior to Marcb last year Miss Hastie, who was travelling in the colonies, proposed an expedition to the South Sea Islands partly for pleasure and partly for scientific purposes. The Sydney Belle was chartered at the rate of £86 per month. Miss Hastip ■ecured officers and crew and fitted oat the vessel extensively for the island cruise, and the barquentine was lying in Auckland harbour in readiness to sail when a dispute arose with the owner as to who should be master of the vessel. The parties could not agree, and finally Mist Hastle threw up her obarter and now claims damages for losses she had been put to. The case is not conoluded.
