A beautiful and n'rtuou* actress, Miss Mabel Harlow, offered a kiss to be sold by auction to the highest bidder. The first offer of a miserable forty shillings was contemptuously refused, and a syndicate was formed to buy the kiss, which should then be raffl-d for by the sub scribera. A Colonel, Sir Eduardo Fortescue, bid against the syndicate, which struggled on for some time, but at length withdrew, and the kiss was knocked down to Sir Eduardo for £800. The beautiful actress, blushing doeply, advanced towards Sir Eduardo, who wa« of respectable age, to give the stipulated kiss. Then the gallant gentleman, bowing low, addressed her, ' I b?g that you will excuse me, but I have not been bidding on my own account, but on that of my grandson, whose birthday is t * day.' And he presented to Miss Mabel a charming boy of seven years of age, whom the fair aaires3 kiestd with all her heart."
