The Tragedy at Palmerston North.

A VERDICT OF MURDER AND

SUICIDE.

At 3.40 p.m. on Monday the jury, after a retirement of an hour and 40 minutes, brought in the following verdicts on the deaths of William and Martha McKain, the verdicts being separate, as directed by the coroner : — " We find that the deceased, William Daniel McKain, committed suicide by shooting himself with a revolver at Palmerston North on February 18, 1899, and we wish to add that although be was suffering from worry, caused

by recent business disappointments, no evidence has been adduced to show that he was other than sane.

We find that the deceased Martha McKain, known as Minnie McKain, was murdered at Palmerston North on the 18th of February, 1899, by two pistol shots fired by her husband, William Daniel McKain, and we wish to add that though the said William Daniel McKain was apparently suffering from business worry, yet no evU^j dence has been adduced to show that he was other than sane."

Both verdicts were practically unanimous ones.

In connection with the late lament* . able tragedy in this district, the>*ij Citizens' Life Assurance Company, in which office the deceased man McKain held a policy, has taken upon itself to secure the necessary proofs to complete the claim, thus relieving the relatives of the unfortunate man of all trouble and worry in this direction. The Citizens' policies are free from>sfllr restrictions as to suicide, or any other means by which death may be met.— • Standard.
