Manawatu County Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday last. There were present Crs J. G. Wilson (Chairman), J. R. McLennan, T. Masters, H. Hammond and Clark. Cr A. Strang was granted leave of absence. The inward correspondence was dealt with as follows : — From Martin Boyle, stating that he had been delayed in the completion of

his contract on the Beach road owing to inability to obtain the necessary timber. — The proposal was approved, and the overseer directed to obtain timber for Mr Boyle. From Mr J. Neill, offering to make dog collars complete for 7d each.—Accepted. From the Foxton Borough Council, requesting that the balance of up*** pended loan borrowed for the BiSJ^flfex road be expended in claying the same ; also stating that the slaughterhouses of Messrs Easton and Walsh and Howan, were within the Borough U* censing area, and requesting the Mana« watu County Council to hand over the fees received in respect to their licenses to the Borough Council. '•*• The clerk was directed to ascertain whether the slaughter-houses referred to are in the Foxton district. From J. M. Greenaway, concerning damage said to have been caused tojfc» p . case of glass in transit over the tras . . way. The chairman said the ManiSh/ of the Tramway was positive thanie damage had not been done to the'glasss while handled by the tramway officials. The clerk had written to the shipping company, who, while refusing to ac« knowledge liability, would pay half the cost of the damage, namely, £i 4s.—. It was decided to recommend Mir Greenaway to accept this sum. _„. From the Department of LaniSloi reference to the exchange of the Beach roads. Clerk to draw attention! of the Under Secretary of Lands that the Gazette notices does not refer to a change of roads. From R. Chapman, Foxton, asking on what terms the unused punt at the sl Shannon ferry could be purchased, for use to land passengers from steamers at the Fishermen's Huts, From the Chairman of the Horowhenua County Council, stating that the punt might be sold for £zo.—Tne punt to be sold for that sum. From the Under-Secretary of Lands,, with copy of warrant, giving the Foxton Borough Council authority to erect a bridge across the Manawatu at Wirokino. The Chairman said the warrant had been granted with too much haste. The Manawatu County Council had expressed its willingness to pay a portion of the cost of a bridge not to exceed £5,360, providing the Government subsidised the work £ for ,£. A plan of the proposed bridge had been asked for, but not sent, therefore, It was not strictly correct as stated in the warrant, that plans had been sub* mitted to the Council, and the erection of the bridge formally agreed to. He noticed that the Marine Board had objected to a bridge on the plan first proposed. If it was made compulsory by the Board to put a pier in the centre of the river, the cost of the bridge would be enormously increased, and the Manawatu Council called upon to pay a much higher sum to the cost of the bridge than was antici-^ pated. ---3!/ The Clerk was directed to write to" the Minister of Lands, and state the conditions on which Jhe Council was prepared to contribute to the cost of the proposed bridge. It was resolved " That this Council await definite proposals from the Government re the building of the Bulls, bridge, before recommending theb^Mkj ceptance." 4H^fa It was resolved that J. G. Harris be appointed Registrar of Dogs for the County, the fee to be 2s 6d for sheep dogs and §s for all other dogs. Mr Harris to pay the Council £49 3s 6d for the right to collect the tax. That J. Matthews' tender of £1 14s gd per chain was accepted for work on Kellow's Line, and C. P. Wilson's of £21 7s to erect a bridge on Elkin's Line.— Abridged from Advocate.
