FOXTON RACING CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING.
President, F. Robinson; Vice-presi-dent, E. S. Thynne; Judge, Jno. Davies ; Stewards and Committee, W. Robinson, J. F. Overend, W. B. Rhodes, H. Border, W. Purcell and J. H. Howan; Handicapper, J. E. Henry; Clerk of Scales, J. Cummerfield; Clerk of Course, J. Andrews ; Timekeeper, A. E. T. Nixon ; Starter, E. Wood. ' Treasurer, Geo. Gray. The above Club held their annual race meeting on Monday and Tuesday, and were again extremely fortunate in having fine weather for the gathering. The attendance on the first day, as was expected constituted a record for the Club. In addition to residents of the Foxton district a very large number of people came from Woodville, Palmerston, and other towns on the West Coastj the special train arriving in the morning being crowded to excess with excursionists. The racing was splendidly conducted throughout, and reflected the highest credit on the officials of the Club. The secretary, Mr J. R. Whyte, was most indefatigable, and carried out his duties in a manner which earned him the warm congratulations of the members of the Club and visitors from other districts. Mr Angus Keith, of Shannon, who I officiated as his assistant, was also most attentive to his duties. Mr E. Wood was perhaps not so successful as we have seen him in despatching his fields, but he sent the majority away in fine style, while the clerk of the scales (Mr j. Cummerfield), clerk of the course (Mr J. Andrews), and treasurer (Mr G. Gray), also gave valuable assistance. The President (Mr F. Robinson), Judge (Mr J. Davies), and the stewards and committee were present and did their utmost to ensure the success of the meeting. Mr E. S. Thynne (vice-president), was unfortunately unable to attend owing to a recent bereavement in his family. The Otaki Maori Brass Band was in attendance, their playing being greatly admired. The inside and outside booths were in charge of Mr Mumford, who with his assistants, was kept busily engaged both days attending to the wants of the public. Mr Joe Tos had the outside refreshment booth, where a capital luncheon was provided by Mr A. Langley. The stewards'- lunch gave complete satisfaction, for which thanks are due to Mr J. Walls, the caterer. The course was in capital condition for racing and some good times were registered, the sport throughout being most enjoyable. Mr A. E. T. Nixon, of Wanganui, made a most efficient timekeeper. On the first day the Flying was won by Mr T. >E. Wanklyn's Pastime, after a good finish with Worry. The owner of Pastime is a local resident, and it is needless to say that the victory was a very popular and deserved one. Mr David Scotti of Willowbank, Rangitikei, the owner of Worry, was more fortunate in the First Hurdles, which he appropriated with Hangfire, the win being a very easy one. The Foxton Cup' was won by the Ashurst mare The Onyx, who led almost ihe whole of the distance, Toa finishing second. Mr P. Hanlon, the owner of The Onyx bought this mare last year for £10 at a horse sale in Palmerston, and his confidence in her has been fully justified. The Summer Handicap was rather a puzzle for backers, the majority of whom preferred Surrey. The winner turned up in Aquatic, who easily defeated the other contestants. Derry, owned by Dr Reed, the sporting medico of Palmerston North, had an easy win in the Stewards' Hack Handicap, Mr D. Scott's Worry having to be content with second honours. The Maiden Hack Race was won by Brilliantine, who paid the smallest dividend during the day, namely £3 12s. In the Hack Welter Derry again came out with another win, paying her lucky supporters £4 17s. The sum of £3,736 was put through the totalisator the first day, and £3,038 the second, making a total of £6,774 for the meeting, .and being £975 ore tnan last year. Messrs Neylon and Spriggens worked the totalisator to the utmost satisfaction of .the sporting public, and they paid out some handsome dividends during the day, speculators generally getting a bad time. Anyone investing £1 on each horse in every event the first day would have won £19 4s. No protests were lodged during the meeting, and nothing occurred to mar its enjoyableness. The improvements effected on the ground by the Club were also most favourably commented upon, and the jockeys were loud in their praise for the commodious room that has been erected for their use. The Club is to be congratulated on the success of its annual gathering. Following are results of the first day's races : — 1.
