THE MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY.
The magisterial inquiry into the Gatton tragedy has commenced. The evidence so far has disclosed nothing new. Burgess, under examination, denied he was at Gatton at the time of the tragedy. He detailed his movements, though he was unable to say where he was Christmas and Boxing Day. He presented a calm demeanour till witness Deylan identified him as the man who told him that Michael Murphy had been shot even before such was suspected. Burgess thereupon became furious, and slashed at witness, shouting, " I'll dig you in the neck." The police seized him, and prevented vioence.
