THE POLICE OFFICERS ENGAGED.
On the 2nd inst. the same correspondent advised :— lt would be, of course, imprudent in print to say upon what lines the police are working here, or even to review what they have already done. Suffiice it to say that the utmost energy has been displayed, and the people of this district are ■ \ ■■ quite satisfied that no chance is beitfe I. neglected. Some may be inclined JT i cavil at there being no move in tts" i direction or that direction, and to air theories which appear plausible enough without the light of full information. Chief Inspector Stuart was; here during part of last week, but Inspector Urquhart, Chief of the ' Criminal Investigation Department, has really charge of the case, and has \ with him Sub- Inspector Galbraith, Detective Toomey. and two other officers of the Criminal Investigation i branch of the force. Inspector Urquill! hart is a splendid bushman, aseood i i tracker, possibly, as any of the abort- i ginals employed, and an officer of in- i domitable energy. But to my mind it ii I requires more than a bushman or a M tracker, or even the most complete I
human bundle of energy in the uni verse to handle this case. It repuire a judge of human nature, a man o strong reasoning power, and generally high mental attainments. Thos< qualities Inspector Urqubart possesses and with them an intense thougl quiet earnestness and tenacity of pur pose. Sub- Inspector Galbraith, too is an officer who can use his head, 1 deep thinker, and of large experience The police have discovered some thing in a water-hole in the vicinity o the scene of the Gatton tragedy, which they state, wiil have an importanl bearing on the case.
