It is not often that within the one week two horses fight out three such bitter finishes as did Marina and Rubin at Manawatu and Rangitikei, each scoring a win and a dead heat. There was hardly any difference of opinion that had young Manning, on Marina, not been fairly tied up on the rails, the sweet little Sou- wester mare would have beaten Tasman's son ; even as it was only sheer gameness enabled Marina to get up just in the nick of time to get a dead heat verdict. There were many who after the above referred to event was run fully expected Charlie Jenkins to have a chat with the Stewards, but nothing was said. In my opinion r I consider the Stewards of the Rangitikei R.C. would have only been doing their duty to have administered a caution to Master Charlie.

The same thing was even more apparent in the Farewell Handicap, when Marina and Rubin were again locked together in a bitter finish, the former on the rails, very much so in fact, and I distinctly saw young Manning lift his leg up to escape contact with the fence. Backers of Rubin were not surprised to find the popular and straight going young owner of Marina lodge a protest, and had same been sustained I don't think they would have taken umbrage at the stewards taking such action. It is no good mincing matters in these things, and as I was not interested financially in the event, or in fact in any others run at the meeting, I have no hesitation in expressing it as my opinion, that had Jenkins' actions, in both the Greatford Stakes and Farewell Handicap, occurred anywhere else but at Rangitikei, he would have not got off so lightly. If this sort of thing is not checked, some of the boys will be smashed up, and it is on their behalf I have penned the above, which will doubtless prove distasteful to the Stewards of the Rangitikei R.C. and a horseman popular in that district, which is his home. That I cannot help. My duty is to write as I think and let the rest take care of itself. — " Augur " in the Wanganui Chronicle.
