The British second-class cruiser Iphigenia (8600 tons, eight gum) has arrived at Nankin, which is situated on the lower part of Yang tse river. Her dispatch to this neighbourhood is interpreted by the Chinese as an indication of the intention of Great Britain to oppose the proposed active enforcement of French claim 3 against China. Tha Chinese requested a respite after the French Minister bad threatened to invade the country unless the rebels releasda a French missionary whom thpy'had captured. Notwithstanding this request, a French expedition is proceeding towards Kweichou fn, on the middle portion of the Yang^tge. The treaty port of I chang-fu, aho on the Yang-tso, below Kweichou, is likewise threatened. The British, American, German and Japanese merchants at Shanghai have sent to their respective Miniate re at Pekin identical protests against the exclusive extension of the French concessions at Shanghai.
