An influential syndicate has applied to the Colonial Office and the Colonial Agents-General to acquire 100.000 acres of specified lands in New Guinea, without monopolistic concessions such as the last New Guinea syndicate sought for. The minimum capital of the latest venture is £100.000.
The "Pall Mall Gazette " publishes a statement to the effect the Dr Lsyds, S9crefcary of State for the Transvaal, is hopeful of arranging for a syndicate to lease Delagoa in return for a large loan to Portugal. Judgment has been passed in the case of Thomas Senior, a resident of Canning Town, London, who was lately convicted for the manslaughter of his eight-months-old son, through neglecting to call in a doctor. Accused is a member of the sect known as " Peculiar People," and did not believe in doctors' treatment, but got the *lders of the sect to lay their handa on and pray for the child.
An appeal against the conviction was made to the Qaeen's Bench Division of the High Court of Justice, which decided that though S j niir was admitedly a kind father, be was rightly convicted of man slaughter owing to his neglect to obtain medical aid.
On the case being remitted to the convicting Court, Senior was sentenced to four months' imprison ment.
