The Victoria Cross.

m Mr E. McKenna, V.C., formerly stationmaster at Palmerston, came in for some complimentary notice at the dinner to the Governor at Wanganui on Thursday night. In the course of his remarks the Mayor said a reference to the early days would be incomplete were he not to mention the veterans, and he was pleased to see among them that evening, men who had done their share of fighting in the days that were gone, one of them, Ensign McKenna, wearing the token of distinguished valour, the Victoria Cross. In replying his Excellency said he had been immensely impressed that day by seeing the veterans present as a guard ot hondur, and he was pleased to see one among them that evening decorated with the highest honour in the British Empire — the Victoria Cross. The Knight of the Garter, or any other honour was insignificant beside that one great honour, and he was always glad to find men who had fought tor Old England scattered over the world. One who was present informs us that the old soldier's name was received with an outburst ot applause.
