Engaged to a Married Woman.
A KIND FRIEND. In the divorce case, Batger v. Batger, at Auckland, the evidence of Thomas Henderson, the respondent was taken. He admitted giving Mrs Batger three rings, a gold watch, and sums while she was at the Grand Hotel, of under £100. He gave her a diamond engagement ring and paid her passage to Sydney in January last, and paid her maid some sums for her boy, who remained in Auckland, and while his mother was in Sydney sent £20 to Sydney to her. He was assisting her, but not maintaining her. In 1896 he contemplated marrying her, and he made inquiries how an American divorce could be got, and received a precise of the American law on the subject from a friend in 'Frisco. The judge, in snmming up, said an intimacy existed between the co-respon-dent and respondent, but it was for the jury to say whether in the evidence adduced there was a criminal intimacy. The jury found on the two issues submitted that the co-respondent did net commit adultery with Thos. Henderson, or a A. P. D. Hughes, whose whereabouts was unknown. The petition was dismissed and costs awarded to co-responnent.
