Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, DEC. 8, 1898. The Mayor of Foxton.
***** ' On Monday night Mr J. R. Stansell sat for the last time as Mayor at the Council table, and it was very satisfactory to us to be enabled to report the crisp expressions of praise which fell from Councillor Hennessy's lips. We have all along supported Mr Stansell, and have never regretted putting our faith in him, and we do not think Councillor Hennessy was very far out in his statement that Mr Stansell has been the best Mayor Foxton has had, though we do not think that the speaker had the opportunity of seeing the work that other Mayors have done so well as we have. There is one thing that may as well be mentioned, to put some points straight, and that is that some Mayor must have had the foresight to have secured for the Borough the reserves which Mr Stansell properly takes credit for caring for. Mr Stansell can leave the town with the certainty that his efforts to push the town ahead has been appreciated, and as each year goes by we trust the same remark on each Mayor may be truly said. Why we have ventured to suggest that other Mayors are entitled to a good deal of credit for what they have done for Foxton is to point the lesson that it is not always the noisiest portion of the machinery that does the work, and that also before a man car build, the foundation must be laid. Thus without desiring in any way to discount the energy shown by Mr Stansell, we trust that others will not be deterred from the sober and businesslike way of laying solid foundations for others to build upon, simply because they do not see a chance of seeing their work brought to a completion. Thus whilst again congratulating Mr Stansell on his successful term of office, we have to bid him adieu and welcome our new Mayor, Mr Alf Fraser. We have great hopes that he will also show that he will leave no stone unturned which he thinks can be turned to the advantage of the town. The Mayor is dead, long live the Mayor ! so must we shout, and we shall look forward to the date on which Mr Fraser will officially enter übon the duties of his office- for the announcement of a very interesting sketch of things which may be attempted to be carried out during the coming year.
