The Bishop of Ballarat' s Speech.
The recent utterance of Bishop j Thornton, of Ballarat, at a Church Congress, in which he vehemently de- : nounced the low tone of life in the cities and in the bush in Australia, I has called down a storm of hostile , criticism. The Bishop also " lashed out " at journalism, the Bar and legislators. ! The Australian Natives' Association has wrathfully resented the imputa- • tions. i The " Argus " is of opinion that the Bishop's diatribe will do little harm to ; Victoria, but it may do considerable • harm to the Bishop's character. ; The " Sydney Morning Herald " questions the Bishop's facts, and leaves him to choose his horn of a dilemma. If he is right, the paper says, the Church is impotent ; and 15 he is wrong, he has traduced the people of Australia.
