Shocking Railway Accident.
vilfred Healhcote, a teacher at; Wairio, was killed in a shocking j manner when going home by the; train on Saturday afternoon. He ; Was with others in the rear com j parinwnt cf a carriage next the brake van, aud when the train was ; Dear Wallacelown station he ro3e and went outside. Immediately • after he was seen t ) fall, and on his ( felloW -passengers goiDg out they saw ! that his shoulder or armpit had caught on the brake block of the van ' and he was being dragged face down. | The train was going about 10 miles | an hour. The guard was alarmed . aud the brakes put on, and an [ endeavour made to attract tne attention of the driver. As the train Approached the platform Heathcot's body became disengaged with the brake block and Iho wheel passed over his neck. The deceased was a young married man. Ha was an Englishman and had been about 1 ) years in the district, and may be remembered by educationalists as the patentee of the roller blackboard. From the fact that a few spots of blood were found on the platform of the carriage, it is suppssed that his nose bad been bleeding and t hit .he fell wh^n hanging out to let the drops fall clear of the carriage. The fatality, from the fact that the man was dragged a considerable distance, caused intense excitement among the passengers.
