The Primate on Ritualism.
The Archbishop of Canterbury ia October last, at his primary visila tion made some extraordinary state nients, Oo the subject of the Lord's Supper be said that it was ••' not unlawful to hold and teach " in the Church of England the doctrin\ •Commonly called the Lutheran doctrine, called consubstantiation." , He further said that "ia some my a- ( terious way there is a Presence j attached to the Elements from the moment of their consecration." The London Times of October 17th in a powerful leading article said there was not much difference I between the mystified doctrine of Con9ubstantiation and the Romish j one of Transubstaniiation. The Roman Catholics elicit Transub- \ stantiaUon from the words " This is My body " making the meaning of them to be "This brea^ is transformed into My body." The Lutheran!* adopt another interpretation viz. ♦» The body of Christ is under this bread," and hence the doctrine of Consutotatotiation. The deliverance of the Archbishop instead of inducing peace in the Church of England has made fcr war. A leading church paper says <( a struggle more severe than any since the Reformation must now take place."
