At Last.
MEMORIAL SERVICE fO GORDON.
A memorial service was held at ten o'clock on Sunday morning, the 4th September, in the ruins of Gordon's Palace at Khartoum. On the roof of the palace two flagstaff's were placed, and on the ground below were guards of honour from all the British corps and the nth .Soudanese. ... A special guard on the right consisted of Engineers, Gordon's corps. The German Attacbi was present in full white uniform, and the general -staff", with tho Sirdar and staff, were in the front and centre of the parade. The palace is ruined, but the stonework is singularly sound. The troops passed round the palace, ending at the'rutned steps where Gordon was mmxlered. A crowd of natives looked . on as the officers on the, roof began .hoisting a large Union Jack very slowly, while the National Anthem was played, and a royal salute of twenty-one guns was fired. At the same time the Egyptian flag was slowly hoisted* and/the Khedival hymn played. Three cheers followed for the Queen,' arid three for thp Khedive, white nineteen, injnute-gun| baomed in memory of Gordon as Go-vernor-General; then a dead majpj was played— thirteen years and ||i days after the murder. .. . s f * Now the Presbyterian Chaplain rfifd the 15th Psalm, and the Rev. A. W.!p. Watson, M.A., the Anglican Cbablajta, said the Lord's Prayer, while the .Stjv. Robert Brindle, Roman Catholic ohaplain read a special memorial pr£y«r. The pipers of the Seaforth |JMgE*i landers performed a coronach/ apd the Soudanese bugles and ban Splayed " Abide with me," Gordon's j&yourlte hymn. The senior ofncerjjK shook hands with the Sirdar, and the parade was over. '■■
