Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, NOV. 10, 1898.
In the railway advertisement notice is given that holiday excursion tickets will be issued to Palmerston on the i6th and 17th November, available for return to the following Tuesday. The trains will run on Wednesday as they generally do on Thursday, and on Thnrsday there will be no midday train. The opening of the Foresters' Lodge will take place to-night at Osborne's Hall, the building adjoining Mr Hairier' s , chemist shop, at eight o'clock. There are over 100 names proposed as full members, besides many for honorary members. The scholars attending the Methodist Sunday School had a capital holiday in Victoria Park yesterday. A large number marched in procession from the school to the ground in the morning, attended by the Rev. W. Woollass and Mr E. Osborne. On the ground the children, and even those past childhood, engaged in races and other fun. Tea, sandwiches and cake were provided and the ladies worked hard and saw that none went empty away. The cricketers were playing their match in the park and at its conclusion were also regaled with refreshments, which were much appreciated. Mr Van Weenan, a well-known wool and sheep expert, left Sydney for New Zealand by the Monowai on Saturday. He attends the Palmerston North and Canterbury Pastoral and Agricultural shows, and on behahvof the " Sydney Mail" will report on the stud sheep exhibited. In the last naval battle, only three shots in the hundred of 6000 fired by the Americans took effect on the Spanish ships. Yet the American gunners were of the very best. At Manila, the Spaniards only made three hits altogether ! What is the difference between the engine-driver and the passenger who has lost the train? One is right in front, while the other is left behind. Lord Wolseley, speaking of public school cadet corps, says : " The training which young lads receive in Volunteer or cadet corps while at school is, in my opinion, well adapted to fit them for the duties of 'officers in either the Regular or the AuxUirry Forces in after life ; and it is a matter of national importance that there should be an abundant supply of young men who are qualified by early training to undertake these duties. The Princess of Wales always rides on the right side, usually considered the wrong side of a horse, and when she is riding with another lady the effect is rather strange, as the horses are able to go quite close together, and it is difficult at first to decide which of the two ladies is mounted in the usual way. The " Farmer and Stockkeeper " says that a cow, giving a large quantity of milk, has been slaughtered and every drop of milk has been gathered up, and the largest amount ever found was about four quarts ; hence milk is largely made during the time of milking ; and the cow must be placed under favourable conditions at the time, or you do not get the regnlar quantity of milk. Do not think that the milk is already there, and all you have to do is to draw it out. Only a small portion is in this state. Most of it is there to be changed into milk, but it is not miik, and we must have things favourable for the cow to make this change. The story is published of a French young lady defendant. She remarked that she had bargained for a piece of tapestry with figures worked " as handsome in appearance as my lord the President there. But the plaintiff palms me off with figures as ugly as that of Monsieur the plaintiffs advocate." Judgment for the defendant. Mrs Newth has sold her property on the Moutoa road to Mr Jupp at the satisiactgry figure of £500,
Owing to the other attractions in town, a 'sufficient number did not avail themselves of the excursion 1 by the steamer Nile to the sea beach yesterday, and consequently the owners wisely decided not to run. Messrs Gamman and Co. are not going to shift their sawmill, as they have made arrangements for the disposal of all the yellow pine which may be cut. This piece of news will be much appreciated by the people in the district. A party of Austrian bine jackets have landed and are proceeding to Pekta. The cost of keeping up the drinking fountains and cattle troughs in London is £1700 per annum. A single trough in a busy thoroughfare costs £50. Another of the innumerable stories of President Kruger reaches us. A question about a division of some property, as to the division of which two brothers had a dispute, was referred to him, and it was agreed that his judgement should be accepted. After hearing both sides, said he to the older one : ' I decide that you, being the senior, shall have the dividing of this property ; but.' he added with a twinkle in his eye, ' I also decide that your brother shall have choice of the two portions!" To show that the small birds nuisance is not a myth in the Temuka district, the Leader mentions that a settler the other day shot no fewer than ninety-five with four shots, the birds having gathered near the feeders. The Fat Boy in Pickwick once more. Saturday's '• Post " says : — The tardiness of the message boy is almost proverbial, but few have gone so far as to contract a habit of going to sleep while on a errand. This, however, was stated to be the practice of a small boy who was yesterday charged before the Stipendiary Magistrate with having no visible means of subsistence and who had been found sleeping out. .. From the mother's story it appeared that it was a com- ; mon occurrence for the boy when sent a message to seek some secluded place to rest in, and there he would doze off to sleep, probably not returning home all night. In this instance a constable had found the lad taking his nap. The Magistrate warned the boy of the serious consequences that might result from his extraordinary behaviour, advised him to fight against the habit, and then discharged him. The largest book in the world, according to a recent lecture by Professor Max Muller, of Oxford, is the " Kutho Daw ; or The Religious Codex of the Buddhists." It is written on marble slabs, 729 in number, which it takes a city of pagodos to house, for each slab has its own separhouse. It was not so very long ago that copper was used in Swedan as the chief medium of exchange, and at times merchants had to take wheelbarrows with them when they went to receive payment in large sums. In a recent annual report of a benevolent society having its headquarters in Dublin, the following delightful sentence occurs : — " Notwithstanding the large amount paid by the society for medical attendance and medicine, very few deaths occurred during the year." France's pretensions as a colonising power are absurd, because she has no surplus population. If she acquired all the territory she is grasping at in Africa and elsewhere, she could only throw into it a few cock-hatted and try-coloured officials. It is greed or envy which inspires the colonial policy of France, not necessity.—). F. Nisbet. Mr Schreiner, who leads the Opposition against Mr Cecil Rhodes at the Cape, is a young man in the early forties, with light hair, high complexion, and clear blue eyes. He comes of a gifted family. One of his sisters, Mrs Cronwright- Schreiner, is the renowned writer of " The Story of an African Farm," another is a great promoter of the cause of temperance, I while a brother is a successtul schoolmaster at Eastbourne. We hear that the Foresters and other Friendly Societies have made arrangements to hold a monster picnic on the beach on New Year's Day. It is hoped that close on 600 will attend and they will be accompanied by a band.
