The Continental papers state that the brilliant diplomatic victory over Fashoda ensures British supremacy in Africa. ~^ The French Government has authorised Major Marchand to proceed to Jibutil either by way of the Cono or the Nile. The French are still suspicious, fearing fearing .the increases in British armaments are intended to force other claims. General Kitchener denies the "Diily Chronicle's" story that before Omdurman fell Major Mar chand sent a letter to the Khalifa inviting him to hoist the French flag, and thus deter the British from attacking, and that the Sirdar captured both letter and flag. The Russian papers approve thf withdrawal of French from Fashoda. The French press is bUter with with England, and it also attacks the originators of the expedkiun and and criticises the alliance with Russia. " h a . Matin " statps that Fr«n«vp mission is to retire from Finlvmlm to Jibutil.
