Flax.

« Messrs P, Hennessy and Co. yesterday received a letter from the N. Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company advising that they were in receipt of advice from their London office to the effect that considerable weakness characterises the hemp market at the present moment/and that hemp with extended delivery is practically unsaleable except at a considerable reduction on prices lately ruling. This is due to the unsettled state of affairs between France and England at the present moment, which it is feared may culminate in a war between these two countries. Should matters be settled amicably, however, they think an active demand will set in and prices will harden up to a point higher than is at present obtainable for "spot" parcels. They recommend millers not to contract for a forward delivery at any rate for a week or two at least, pending a settlement of the difficulty that has now arisen between these countries.
