Manawatu County Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday. There were present Crs J. G. Wilson (Chairman), J. R. McLennan, Masters, T. Clark, F. Robinson, Allan Strang. The inward correspondence was dealt with as follows : — From the tramway manager, stating that the receipts of the line for the month of September was £65 8s 7d. The expenditure was £69 4s 6d, consisting of £46 for wages, /15 8s for truck hire ; £4 10s for bolts, and £z is 6d for fish plates. The treasurer reported that the various accounts stand as follows : —

From H. Holmes, manager of Highden Estate, stating that he had paid £31 for cleaning out a drain on the Rongotea road.— The sum £5 granted towards the work. From John Prior, solicitor for B. S: Penny, accepting £3 as compensation for damage done to fence by fire caused through sparks from the tramline engine. From the Ohinemuri County Council with circular containing objections to the Municipal Franchise Reform Bill. From theHutt County Council, with copy of protest made by that body to Government valuation of land. From the Rangitikei County Council inviting the Chairman to be present at the meeting of the former body on the 22nd Inst, when the tenders for the Bulls bridge will be opened.—Chairman to attend. From the Foxton Borough Council urging the desirability of work on the Beach road being proceeded with.— Tenders for the work accepted and will be put in hand at once. . From R. Bryant . asking that his freight account for carriage of hemp and coal, over the tramline, be rendered monthly. — Agreed to. From the Audit office returning the balance-sheet certified as correct and charging £5 10s for auditing the County accounts. Balance-sheet adopted and directions given for the printing of 50 copies. From W. H. K. Flyger explaining the cause of the delay in the completion of the plan for Beach road and promising to send it this week. The manager of the Tramway having reported that the Government Railway Department would not charge for the use of trucks used on the tramway to carry agricultural lime if the Council made no charge for carriage, it was decided to carry such lime free. The applications of F. C. Campbell, J. R. McLennan, E. Croucher and T. Sanson for change of name on rate roll were agreed to. It was resolved that the tender of J. Wittington be accepted at £1 17s 6d per chain for work on Milner's line and £17 12s for the work on Couper's line, that the tender of E. Piggott for lease of Shannon ferry, be accepted, viz the lease to be forgone year at the rate of £75 from the Ist of October. In considering the balance-sheet, the Council commended the manner in which the accounts were arranged, enabling as they did, the ratepayers to clearly understand the finances of the Council. The Councillors expressed the opinion that considering the efficient services of the Clerk he was underpaid. At a later stage of the meeting it was resolved that his salary bo increased to £200 a year. In acquainting the Clerk with the resolution of the Council the chairman said the Council was well satisfied with the manner he had done his work. He had placed the affairs of the Council before them in a manner not done before. His increase of salary would commence from the Ist October. Mr Purnell thanked the Council both for the increase of salary and the kind treatment he had received from the Councillors generally. A special meeting was held and a special order passed to strike a rate of id in the £ to pay interest on the loan of £250. It was resolved that the question of a shed at Rosina siding be left to the chairman and Crs. Robinson and Clark. That the overseer get the river bank road repaired near Scott's ferry, also that the cuttings on Whale line be put in order for dray traffic. That tenders be called to be it by next meeting for metalling Sanson's line and that the next meeting of the Council be held on the same day as the general meeting viz November 3. That the final notice be sent to all having gorse growing on the road in the county, intimating that the gorse must be cleared or the Council will have to take steps under the Public Works Act to have it done. That a Committee consisting of Crs Hammond, Masters and the chairman be appointed to deal with the accounts in November, power being given to them to pass them for payment. Having passed the monthly accounts the Council adjourned. — Advocate.
