Te Aro House.

A complimentary dinner was tendered to Mr W. H. Carter, proprietor, of .Te Aro House, by the j male employers, in the sooial hall of jj the Trocadero on Thursday evening, wm when an exceedingly pleasant hour 111 or two was spent, the tone of the gathering giving ample proof of the cordial feeling which exists between* employer and employee as applied to the w.jII- known Cuba street firm. Mr J. B. Taylor occupied the ohair. " The Queen " was proposed by Mr W. Smith (general manager), and drank with patriotic enthusiasm. In rppp-odin^ to the toast of the proprietor, M>- W. H. Carter, proposed by Mi 1 Taylor, that gentleman enlarged upon the feeling that ehonl<T exi-<f. between master and servant, and said that a huge mistake* was made in regarding an employee as a machine, and trusted that all those present would regard him as a friend who, so long as they did their duty, had their best interests at heart. He confessed to liking the oordial manner in which business was conducted in the colony, but discipline, which governs sudcess io every line of life, must and would be maintained. Mr Carter thanked all pie*eut for the cordial reception accorded him, remarking, at the <<arae time, that he, together with Mr W.
