Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY. OCT. 6, 1898. The Beach.

We desire to express our pleasure at the evidence given at the last meet ing of the Borough Council of the interest Councillors are taking in the Ocean Beach. The Mayor moved in the right direction when moving the resolution to hurry up the Manawatu County Council in getting the road formed through the County limits We know that the Council month? ago It- 1 a contract for the work, but he contractor ha*, for all we have •pen of him, gone on the Grand Tour. We hope the County Chairman, who is aware of the importance of this piece of work to the town, will specially interest himself in getting the contractor to hurry him *elf. Mr Westwood also moved to have steps taken to secure the land at the Sanatorium so that portions of it could be planted. We can only again repeat that it was a direct promise made by the representative of the Counoil to the Commissioner >f Crown Lands, that if the sections were laid off at the beach the Borough would plant the shelter belt. It is high time that the whole question was satisfactorily settled with the Government department.

This shows that once again in* 'crest is awakened in what we have continually said would be a place of very much value to the town. There is however a lot that wants doing, und it will ba interesting to know vho would be prepared to carry hem out. Excursionists to the sea beach will require many things: first they would like to bathe and row ; next they will want some way t.o amuse themselves on the beach ; children coming from inland will •f quire sea-side playthings, buckets, wooden spades, boats, &c. ; and finally, all will want refreshments, good and cheap. The bathing may it first seem a difficulty for want of machines, but we think come enter* orising man and woman who pro <?idtd a small tent for undressing <nd dressing in, with towels and bathing costumes would find their labour rewarded. Some boats will have to be on hire at th* heads on •he excursion days, and they would et readily. The catering and small «ore could be easily arranged, but it wants arranging. The band that is fortunately formed fills a gap, and ii forthcoming on these gala day<hould be well supported, but how ? We do not suppose that they would ike to go round with tbe hat each ime, this having too much the appearance of German binds of horrid memory, but the members ■annot be expected to do much for nothing. Ta^-re are one or two ways which we believe might help to gut ver the difficulty. The band might arrange a concert and retain the proceeds, and do so again as the occasion demanded. The different imusement caterers might agree to give 60 much each, a 9 well as thr iwners of the steamers. This if however for the bandsmen to consider, but we hold their presence to be necessary and we do not wish to see them apked to do more than the other townsmen toward 3 making these excursions successful.

It appears probable that if we get, as no doubt we will, a favourable reply from the Railway Department, a Sea-aide Committee of the business *nd leading men in the district should be set up to secure all schemes they considered attractive beint? carried out and well announced, and we hope our two candidates for the Mayoralty will join together in call i.ig such a meeting together.
