The Agent-Generalship.
« Captain Russell yesterday asked the Premier whether he would inform the House what steps the Government intend to take with regard to filling the appointment of Agent-General when the term of office of the present occupant expires? He pointed out that Mr Reeves was appointed on the 14th January, 1896, and consequently the appointment, being tor a period of three years, would become vacant before Parliament re-assembled. After the prorogation he had the pleasure of noting during his visit to Englard the attention Mr Reeves gave to the duties of his office, and the courtesy and kindness he displayed to colonists, visiting England. — The Premier said this was one of those questions one was apt to overlook, and he was obliged to Captain Russell for calling attention to the matter. The term of office of the present Agent-General expired on the 10th January next, and the Government had not yet considered the question of his re-appointment or the appointment of a successor. If, however, it would remove any anxiety hon members might have he might state that he had no intention of -eplacing Mr Reeves in January next (Laughter.) The Government would consider the question at an early date He was pleased to hear that there was a general consensus of opinion that the present Agent-General had faithfully performed his work and had satjsfied expectations. — N.Z.
