The Origin of the Name of Otaki.
At the last mcetiDg of the CMak* Road Board on Saturday last Wardei Knocks informed the meeting tha' he was in a position to state that thi original name of onr township was Aotaki, which has been shortened v Otaki. Mr Knocks procpedpd t. relate the following story, which h '. an id, was perfectly authentic :— Th tweHtheart or wife ofachipfrain d the Ngatiapa tribe, named Te Rnngi takoru, deserted him and fled south ward p. Te Bangitakoru followed hf and ou his journey south he naron all the rivers he pawed— Rangitike : Manawatu, Obau, Waikawa and a L
nn. On arrival at the Otaki river he saw the fugitive in the distance, and therefore named the stream Aotaki. | which name has, with the excision of the initial letter, etuck to the river and township ever since. The story . went on to say that Te Rangitakoru caught up to his wife at Pukerua and tradition says the woman there rushed into the sea to escape from her pursuer, and was turned into a ' pillar of stone. — Mail.
