The prisoner (who blushed painfully) admitted that Ihe charge was quite true, but was quite unable to say anything for himself when fche usual quwy was put by the Magistrate. His employer on going into the witness box gave prisoner an excellent character, and said he wan a most bashful young man, and was i in love with two young ladies. On the Saturday afternoon in question, some of his shopmates informed him that both ladies were waiting " round the corner " for him. Prisoner then became very excited, and, though most anxious to meet the ladies, he . lacked tbo necessary courage for the ordeal. Hia companions, therefore plied him with liquor, and it appear, ed that instead of walking out, with the young ladies, he had been walked of by a policeman. Sir James — I .suppose when he took the drink he whs trying to screw his courage up to sticking point ? The employer — That is so. Sir James (to prisoner) —Go away and don't go courting in this way again.
