The Price of Goal.
Some interesting fignrses relating to tha price of coal were quoted by Mr O'Began on Thursday. The wholesale price of coal in Westport, he said* was 10a a ton, and retail 20s. At Wellington the retail price wai 88s, at Fatea it was 445, at Chriitohurch 88s, and the same price at Lyktelton. In view of the cost of freight, he considered these prices exorbitant, and asked that a Select Committee o! both Houses should be appointed to enquire into and report on the subject with a view to coal being disposed of at more reasonable rates. The Premier agreed that the prices charged for coal were in many oases too high, and pointed oat that ac almost the whole of the coal-bearing land was the property of the State, the State oonld, if it desired, regulate the price to be charged by inserting a clause in the leases given. Whether it would be wise to do this was another matter. He saw no objection to eetting tip the Committee asked for. — JVrf
