Tired of Life.

♦ General Railli, one of the best known citizens of Athens, has committed suicide at the age of g8 I ' This, remarks the Daily Chronicle, is all the more remarkable in that the general rivalled Ninon de l'Enclos in his amazing juvenility. He was still immediately sought after in society, and even as a dancer ! It was his daily habit to take a ride on horseback, and a few days ago on returning from this exercise he sent his servants on errands and then shot himself, leaving a paper on which he had written that he was tired of life. The Athens correspondent of the Times says : " The tragic dyath of General Ralli on ioth June has removed a prominent figure from the centre of Athenian life. On the morning of that day the old general, who was in his 98th year, took a drive in the town and purchased a revolver. On his return to his house, where he lived alone with two servants, he gave orders that he was not to be disturbed, lay down on a sofa and shot himself. Though enjoying excellent health, considering his advanced age, j the general has been suffering from a I nervous malady which seemed to prey upon his mind. On his table was found a sheet of writing paper with the words: — "My God I have sinned, sinned, sinned. I am tired of life." General Ralli was born in 1801 in Constantinople and studied at a military school in England. He came to Greece in the time of Capodistria, and was employed in the commissariat department of the army. In the social life j of the capital General Ralli was übiI quitous and was a frequent guest at the Foreign Legations. In spite of his years he was an inveterate dancer and a skilled horseman.
