The Thistle.

The Freezing Company's new tender Thistle, commanded by Captain Connor, arrived at the Town Wharf a few minutes after one o'clock on Wednesday afternoon. The Thistle's dimensions are 90ft, long and 20ft. beam, fore«and-aft rigged, and fitted with two 45 B. H.P. engines of about 110 H.P., twin screws which propel her at the rate of 7£ knots an hour. She brought 40,000 feet of timber and 400 posts for the Wanganui Sash and Door Company. The Thistle reflects greofc credit on her builders, Messrs Lam and Brown of Whangaroa, who did not spare any trouble in carrying out th^ir contract in a skilful and trustworthy manner. The floors are massive beams, and carry the main keelson and sister keelsons, worked out of single lengths of kauri, lOin and 14in, with lighter intermediate keelsons to carry the floor of the hold. The hold is 50ft long, and insulated on ribs and deck with six inches of pummice, while the bulkheads are of massive timber with 9in of insulation. The hold will carry a cargo of 1600 frozen sheep. The boat ha*. an exceedingly neat and pretty appearanoe, but is well and strongly built. The masks of kauri are strong and short, being made so to allow of the tender lying longaide the large steamers without fouling their yards. The deckhouse includes a saloon, captain's cabin, engineer's cabin, and the quarters for the crew, aIBO a neat galley and store room. The deck winch for working the cargo is a fine pieoe of machinery. It Uof 10 h.p., and will lift 1 ton 1251bs per minute from an incline shaft, or 1500 at the same speed vertically. The engine-room ia aft. and is fairly large to admit of a refrigerator being fitted up if required. There is also room for a cabin with two bunks. Tbb engines are powerful looking machines. . The load draft with mutton will be

about sft Gin, but in fine weather the loading can be adjusted to about sft draft, bringing her to an even keel. This should enable her to give quick despatch to the big steamers.— fhronide
