Sir Herbert Kitchener, Sirdar of the Egyptian Army, reviewed the whole of the fores under his com* mand and practised attacking manoeuvres, presenting a front two miles long. The advance on the Khalifa's position has begun. The cavalry and gunboats have reconnoitred within 40 miles of Omdurman. They discovered that the Dervishes had withdrawn from the outposts.
