Chaff-cutter and Bagger.
+■ On Tuesday afternoon there was landed from the Queen of the South to the order of our go-ahead town* man, Mr George Coley, one of the latest and best chaff-cutters ever introduced into this district. The correct description of the machine is " one Australasian chaff-cutter fitted with riddles, elevator, caving elevator patent duplex bagger, patent clip rings, portable on high wheels with oil caps and shafts." Messrs Andrews and Beaven are the makers. The above is likely to be as uninteresting as Greek to the uninitiated, but what it can do tells its own value. The machine is supplied with double cutting wheels, so that one wheel can be sharpened whilst its mate is at work, which means that no time is lost during the necessary work of sharpening. The feeding trough is fitted with a travelling gear which carries all straw on to the cutting wheel, and enables two men to be employed in feeding. There is provision so that the chaffcutter runs at a higher speed than ordinarly and thus cuts finer chaff. There is also little or no waste as there is an elevator attached to the bottom of the machine which brings up any pieces that have escaped and puts them under the knives again. It is reckoned that 25 tons of chaff can be put through in a day and, if desired, can be pressed into sacks going only 20 to the ton, a great consideration when carriage of chaff has to be considered. Mr G Coley has a machine that he is justly entitled to be proud of, though ifc will cost, landed hare, close upon £140. The total weight of the chaff-cutter is 28 cwt.
