All About the Hat.
The Hat Review say a men feel th necessity of a species of moral strain waistcoat, and submit to the dig comfort of a high hat with the sain > readines3 as they do a starched shirk. Soft h»ts or Derbys, and shirt 3of ?ilk or soft flannel, may afford comfort and relaxation for a time, buman always reverts with satisfaction in the end to the high hat and Btarahed shirt. All of which tend to show the importance which the hat plays in the existence of man. It is the outcome of evolution, and one of the principal marks of progress enlightenment, and civilisation. When a dusky savage of the interior of Africa feels glimmering within his breast elementary aspirations to civilised life, what is the first article of clothing that he adopts to conceal his barbaric nudity ? Is it a coat, a waistcoat, or even a pair of trousers ? No ; it is a hat ; and if he can only procnre for himself a hat be is indifferent to the rest. Indeed (he breeches constitute a sort of
afterthought in his ideas on the subject of good form. He realises the fact which we all know so wellnamely, that it is not the manners which make the man, but the hat.
