Foxton Borough Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held last night at 7.30 o'clock. Present— His Worship the Mayor (Cr J. R. Stansell), and Crs P. Hennessy, J. W. Walsh and A. Fraser, The minutes of th,e last meeting, and T also those of two special meetings held on 24th and 27th July, were read and^^ confirmed. A large amount of inward and, outward correspondence was read. A deputation of flaxmillers, consisting of Messrs Geo. Coley, A. Baker, H. Austin and R. Walden waited on the Council in regard to conserving the flax on the Motoa Estate. Cr Fraser introduced the deputation, and Mr Austin said they had come to < request the Council to take what steps they thought best to stop the grubbing up of flax on the Motoa Estate, which would necessarily mean a serious loss to all those interested in the flax trade if it was allowed to be carried out. He understood it was now the intention of the Company to grub up the whole of the flax. The Mayor said everything had been done so far by the Council in regard to the flax industry. He thought if an influential deputation, consisting not only of millers, but also the business people and others interested went to Wellington and interviewed the Minister, more good would be done. In the course of his remarks, he asked the deputation what they thought was best to be done. Mr Austin said they were of opinion that a public meeting should be held to discuss the matter. The Mayor said he was cnaite in accord with the idea of holding a public meeting, which would be done. He thought it should be held as soon as possible, and would be willing to attend a meeting on Tuesday, 9th hist. The deputation then withdrew. Proposed by Cr Walsh, seconded by Cr Fraser, That the tender of Theo. Easton, at £20, for felling trees in Cemetery be accepted. 1 Crs Walsh and Fraser thought the I experience the Council had gained on a former occasion when work at the Cemetery had been undertaken at too cheap a rate, would prevent them accepting the 1 lowest tender on this occasion. Cr Walsh understood from one competent to judge that the lower tender would be far below the estimate. Not carried. — Crs Walsh and Fraser voting for the motion, and the Mayor and Cr Hennessy against. The Mayor also exercised his casting vote against the resolution. The Mayor thought the difference between the two tenders in question was too great.
