Santa Cruz.

The news of the hoisting of the | British fbg at Santa Cruz appears to i have given much satisfaction in ] Svdnty. The Sydney Morning ■■ Herald gives the following as the j opinion of an Island representative \ of Mesera Burns, Philp and Co : — ! "It is the most satisfactory news i received in Sydney for some time, j We have started a line of steamers which connects the group directly with this port, and upon the last steamer's visit to Vanikora, Tapua, and the island of Santa Oruz (all in the Santa Cruz group) she did very well indeed. We have established a station at Tapua, as being central, and the Duff Islands, over which also H.M S. Mohawk has floated the Union Jack, will be worked from Tapua. In every sense it was a timely thing for the Mohawk to do what has been done." Fpaaking of the developments taking place at some other of the groups in the great crowd of Islands in the Pacific, and having special reference to the Spanish-American war, it was pointed out by the representative of Messrs "■JBurns, Philp and Co. that only a four days' run from tbe British New Guinea ports, now connected by steam with Sydney, would bring the Carolines and tbe Lad rones in touch with Sydney. Should the Americans annex these group?, trade would in that case follow the British flag to Australia.
